UCSF’s expansion plan will harm wildlife and increase fatal bird collisions

Dr. Shawn Smallwood, PhD, prepared a biological impact report for the PNC. He noted that the Mt. Sutro OpenSpace reserve is one of the last substantial remaining patches of natural open space in San Francisco. He predicted that substantial harmful impacts to birds and vertebrate wildlife will result from UCSF’s project. He estimated that approximately 6,000 birds a year would die each year from collisions with the New Hospital, the vast majority of which are protected under California’s Fish and Game Code. This is in addition to the probable decline in the overall bird population which would result from the removal of nesting and foraging habitat, essential ingredients for breeding.
